Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is an area of medicine specializing in preventing, diagnosing, and treating health conditions affecting the female reproductive system. It also includes health issues that affect men but are far more common in women, like osteoporosis and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Women’s health covers family planning as well. For example, Dr. Naqvi can help you choose an effective form of birth control to avoid unwanted pregnancy, or he can help treat infertility if you’re having problems conceiving.

What conditions affect women’s health?

Common women’s health issues include:

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Breast cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Menopause

Menopause is the time in middle age when women stop having periods and can no longer bear children. Before reaching menopause, women go through perimenopause, which for some women can be a challenging experience. Hot flashes, fatigue, depression, vaginal dryness, and night sweats are just some of the issues perimenopause and menopause can cause.

Women are also vulnerable to osteoporosis after menopause due to the fall in estrogen (female sex hormone) levels. Osteoporosis weakens the bones, increasing your risk of fractures.

Dr. Naqvi offers annual well-woman exams to identify health issues early when they’re easier to treat.

What does a women’s health evaluation involve?

A women’s health evaluation begins with Dr. Naqvi reviewing your medical history and discussing any current health concerns. He also performs a physical exam, checking your vital signs and looking for abnormalities like breast lumps and other signs of health problems. In addition, he completes a pelvic exam to ensure the health of your vulva, vagina, and cervix.

During your pelvic exam, Dr. Naqvi might take a sample of cells from your cervix (Pap smear). This screening test identifies early signs of cell changes that may indicate cervical cancer development. It also determines if you have human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes most cervical cancers.

After your evaluation, Dr. Naqvi offers recommendations for improving your health. He may suggest weight management, quitting smoking (if applicable), and nutrition counseling. You might need other tests or diagnostic procedures, such as a hormone test or bone density scan, to see if you have any underlying problems.
